Comparisons
promptev vs LangChain and LangGraph
In short
LangChain and LangGraph are open-source frameworks that give engineers complete control over an agent in code. promptev is the assembled product: connectors, retrieval that respects each person's permissions, approvals, audit, channels, billing and an app that non-engineers can use, all maintained for you. Choose a framework when the agent's behaviour is your product. Choose promptev when the agent is a tool your company uses. Developers still get an API, SDKs, MCP and an open-source engine.
The real choice here is not between two products. It is between parts and an assembled product.
Where a framework is the better choice
- The agent is your product. If the behaviour of the agent is what you sell, you want full control of every step.
- Code-level control. Custom graphs, custom memory, custom everything.
- Ecosystem. A very large community, many integrations, and strong tracing and evaluation tools in LangSmith.
- Self-hosting on its Enterprise plan, and regions in the EU and Asia-Pacific.
Where promptev differs
- It is already assembled. Connectors with token refresh, synced knowledge, permission-aware retrieval, approvals, audit, channels, billing and an App.
- Non-engineers build agents. A person describes the job in plain words, or asks Ori, the builder assistant, to build the agent with them.
- Permissions are applied in the search. The asker’s identity and groups go into the retrieval. A document they cannot open is never fetched.
- It is maintained. When a provider changes its API, promptev changes the connector.
- Developers keep their tools. A REST API, Python and JavaScript SDKs, a project MCP server, and the open-source engine.

Frequently asked questions
Is promptev a no-code alternative to LangChain?
Yes. In promptev you describe the agent's job, attach knowledge and tools, pick a model and publish, with no code. Developers can still call agents through the REST API, the Python and JavaScript SDKs and MCP.
Is LangChain free?
The LangChain and LangGraph frameworks are free and open source. The commercial platform around them, LangSmith, is priced per seat plus usage above its free tier. You also pay to build and run everything around the agent.
Can I use promptev's retrieval in my own code?
Yes. The context engine is open source under Apache-2.0, with Python and TypeScript libraries. It does hybrid and graph retrieval and keeps who may see what attached to every passage.
Does LangChain have approvals and masking?
Yes, LangChain provides human-in-the-loop and PII middleware that an engineer wires into an agent. In promptev these are settings on each tool and on the workspace, with a queue, e-mail and Slack decisions, and an audit trail.
